The Basics of Bait Shop Operation: Bait Worm Options

Posted on: 31 July 2020

If you're getting ready to open a new bait shop in an area where fishing is a popular hobby, you need to be sure that you're stocking the right bait worms for your customers. After all, having live bait is preferable for fishing, but you won't get many sales if you don't have the right ones. Here's a look at a few things you should know before you start ordering from any wholesale live bait supplier.

1. Worms

Most freshwater fish can easily be caught using live worms. From nightcrawlers to redworms, you'll find the demand for live bait worms to be significant. You'll want to find a supplier that can provide you with large volumes of bait worms to meet this demand.

Make sure you keep the bait worms properly stored in cool soil, and pack worms for sale in styrofoam containers with plenty of soil. Don't overpack the worms, though. Limit it to about a dozen per small container or a couple of dozen per large container, and ensure that you poke holes in the lid of the container.

2. Leeches

Leeches are a popular choice for larger fish, though they can be used for many different species. If you want to offer leeches for your customers, you'll need to establish a tank and keep them covered with water to preserve them.

Look for a bait worm supplier that can safely and effectively transport leeches to you in water so that they arrive well. Then, store them in water while you're waiting for them to sell. When you pack them for sale, make sure that you put them in a container that won't leak, and add enough water to cover them completely, otherwise, they will die. Keep the containers sealed well to prevent them from escaping.

3. Minnows

Live baitfish can be a popular option for fishing bottom-dweller fish breeds. If the area where you live is popular for this type of fishing, you'll want to offer minnows in your bait shop as well. Minnows can be more difficult to store and sell, but with the right preparation, they will be a great investment. You'll need minnow buckets to sell the minnows. Pack each sale fresh, and seal the minnow bucket to keep them secure and healthy.

These are some of the most popular options for bait. Look for a wholesale live bait worm supplier to work with someone who can meet your needs and schedule deliveries based on your local demand. Don't overload your inventory or you might lose some of your bait worms before they sell.
